Social Media Club Hawaii is hosting an InstaMeet from 5-7:30 p.m. Monday in Hilo.

An InstaMeet gives Instagram users a chance to come together in an informal setting to network and share tips and techniques for using the social media platform. The first-ever event of its kind in Hilo will take place at Queen Liliuokalani Gardens, with participants meeting in front of the Japanese teahouse.

The event is free and attendees do not need to be on Instagram to attend.

Sylvia Dahlby of Hilo and Denise Laitinen of Keaau, both members of Social Media Club Hawaii’s board of directors, will lead the event. Participants can snap pictures in the picturesque setting while networking and gaining insights on how to use the popular social media network.

Started in 2010, Instagram is different than Twitter or Facebook in that it focuses on people posting pictures. The social media network has grown rapidly in recent years and now is the second-most used form of social media in the world, second only to Facebook. On any given day, 1.6 billion photos are “liked” on Instagram, with more than 200 million monthly users.

Small-business owners can benefit from Instagram as it provides an excellent forum in which to showcase a product or service.

This is the first time Social Media Club Hawaii has hosted an event focused on Instagram on the Big Island. Since 2013, Dahlby and Laitinen have organized social media events islandwide, including Tweet-Ups in Hilo, Pahoa and Waimea.

Attendees are asked to register via Eventbrite so the club knows how many people to expect. For more information, email Laitinen at Denise@DeniseLaitinen.com.
